Your Guide to Contact Lens Exams
Are you considering contact lenses but you are a little wary of what to expect at your exam? It can be a little daunting to face something new, but there’s nothing to be concerned about. To ease any anxiety, our team at Today's Vision Barker Cypress shares what you can expect during your contact lens exam.
A Comprehensive Eye Exam
If you haven’t had a recent eye exam recently, you’ll need to start with that. To get the best contacts for your needs, your optometrist will need a recent prescription. If you have had a recent eye exam, those results can be used – unless you’ve noticed any changes or symptoms that need to be addressed.
A Discussion with Your Eye Doctor
Choosing contacts over eyeglasses doesn’t have to be a permanent choice. If you decide you don’t like them, you can always change back. However, your eye doctor will discuss the pros and cons of contacts to help you determine if they’re a good option.
Additionally, you’ll discuss the various types of contact lenses available. This includes everything from disposables to color contacts. It will also include discussing specialty contacts if you have specific vision conditions, like astigmatism.
In addition to checking your overall eye health, there will be testing performed to determine how your contacts should be made. To do this, your optometrist will measure the curvature of your cornea and your pupil or iris size. We will also determine whether you produce enough tears to wear contacts. This is a simple test during which colored eye drops are placed in your eye. Your optometrist will then either place a piece of paper beneath your eye to measure the tears or use a slit lamp to view the tears.
Try Wearing Them
Some optometrists can have you try on a pair of lenses at this appointment to ensure that you feel comfortable and that our measurements are accurate. Most often, you will keep these in for about 20 minutes. If everything seems well at the end of this time, your contacts will be ordered and a follow-up appointment will be scheduled.
